Habit #1: Being persistent
One of the most important habits of successful bloggers is being persistent. Blogging isn’t easy. In fact, one common blogging myth is that blogging is easy! If you are a blogger, you know this is far from the truth.
Blogging has its own set of challenges, that most people don’t know about unless they are in the business. Things change daily, which can really be stressful. I recently went out of town for two nights and didn’t check my phone. When I came home, there were two HUGE changes in the blogging world.
All these changes can be defeating. Maybe you just started to understand a concept or implement a strategy, then out of nowhere it all changes.
Additionally, many bloggers start their businesses to make money. Don’t believe all those articles out there claiming you can make a thousand dollars a month after 1 month of blogging. This is simply just not true! It can be very discouraging to work so tirelessly every day and see little in return.
This is where persistence comes into play. When you are starting your blog (even 2 years later), you are laying the foundation of your business. You might not see the results you want in the first year, the second year, or even the third year!
However, that doesn’t mean you should give up. Businesses don’t just open up at the mall and start booming. It takes time and persistence!
It is definitely difficult to find reasons to keep going when you aren’t getting the results you want. Just know, that the effort you put in now will be rewarded later. Keep hustling- you got this!
Habit #2: Willingness to learn
Many people think blogging is all about writing- boy are they wrong! Blogging requires a lot of learning and independent research, so you definitely need to be willing to learn!
Habits of successful bloggers include learning more about the job, key concepts, and new material. Blogging changes daily sometimes, so you need to be up to date!
Plus, there is no “degree” in blogging, so everything is mostly self-taught. From SEO to marketing, to Pinterest, to design, there is a lot to learn about!
Successful bloggers make time in their schedules to learn. This might include paid or free courses and training videos, reading more about a topic, trial and error, taking a class, or going to a webinar. There are a ton of free and paid learning opportunities out there, you just have to find them!
Some of my favorite training videos were from Moz Academy. They have tons of SEO training videos, that are often free! They are super easy to understand and very informative.
Having the willingness to continue learning and challenge yourself will only help you in the long run! Stay up to date, and never stop learning and exploring!
Habit #3: Making a schedule and sticking to it
One of the most important habits of successful bloggers is not only creating a schedule but sticking to it. A huge part of blogging is consistency, so it is important to develop a schedule that works for you.
Creating a schedule will help you keep track of all the different tasks you are working on, which can be a lot at times! From writing posts, editing images, implementing Pinterest strategies, creating pins, and other side projects, you have a lot going on! Get a good planner to help you keep track!
Once you create a schedule that works well for you, make sure you stick to it. There are a ton of distractions in life, but try your best to hold yourself accountable and get all your daily and weekly tasks completed.
Being your own boss, no one is going to tell you what to do. If you are truly serious about your blogging career, you need to be a little hard on yourself and be able to say no if you haven’t completed your work. You can always edit your schedule if you find you aren’t able to get it all done!
The most important takeaway here is to be consistent. The more consistent you are in your blogging schedule, the quicker it will turn into a habit, feeling less and less like work!
Habit #4: Keep your passion alive
One of the most important habits of successful bloggers is to keep your passion alive. Blogging can get really hard, really quick. You will get stressed and discouraged, and feel like you should just give up.
Stop. Why did you start in the first place? You must enjoy writing, sharing your experiences, or helping others. Try to continually remind yourself why. There is passion behind why you began this journey, and you need to hold onto it to keep moving forward.
Without holding onto your passion, blogging is going to become a chore and a burden. Don’t let your dreams die, and don’t lose sight of why you started in the first place!
This passion is what will drive your blog to the next level. Anyone can write a post, but only the passionate ones will make it in the long run.
If you start to lose sight of your passion amidst all the stressors of blogging, give yourself a break. Take a day or two if you need it to take a step aside from your blog. It is easy to get caught up in the little details in the blogging world and all the stress that comes along with it.
Create a vision. Maybe even make a vision board! What are you working towards, and what are you looking for in this journey? Write down your goals and look back at them frequently. Remind yourself of the small successes you have already made, and know that you are on the right track!
Habit #5: Seeing your blog as a business
Another important habit of successful bloggers is seeing your blog as a business. Especially if you are looking to get serious in your blogging career, you need to see it more as a business instead of a hobby.
Blogging is hard work and requires full-time effort. By viewing your blog as a business, you will shift your mindset to seeing your blog as a business investment, rather than just a thing you like to do.
Blogging is a business. There is money to be made and work to be done! If you don’t adopt this mindset, your blog will never take off.
So, your blog is a business. What does this require from you then? Well, time and energy. You wouldn’t buy a retail space on Main Street and then not tend to it right? Businesses need love, time, attention, energy, etc. The same goes for your blog!
Just because your business is online, doesn’t mean it is any less valuable. Begin telling people you own a business, and see how it makes you feel! Chances are you will feel more important, valuable, and confident.
Viewing your blog as a business will only shape it to turn out that way. If you continue thinking it as just a hobby or side gig, that’s all it will be.
Habit #6: Connect with and understand your audience
When it comes to building a successful blog, connecting with and understanding your audience is key. Who is your audience? What do they want?
Bloggers typically start out writing about what they are interested in. However, successful bloggers write about what their audience wants.
Why is this important? Well, if your audience isn’t interested in your topics, they aren’t going to read your content! Simple as that. Give your readers what they want, and more. A good way to do this is by using the “people also ask” questions on Google. Incorporate answers to these questions as well so your content is comprehensive.
How do you figure out what your audience wants? There are a ton of different ways. Many bloggers simply ask them! Send out a poll in your email newsletter, social media, or directly on your website. Another way is to check your Google Analytics and Pinterest Analytics to see what posts are most popular, and what other topics your readers are interested in.
You can also connect with your audience by just chatting with them! A good way to do this is on social media like Facebook or Twitter. Answer other’s questions, and connect with those in the same niche as you!
By connecting with and understanding your audience, you will give your readers more content that they are interested in, and build a little community of your own!
Habit #7: Stay consistent with your writing
It is no real shock that bloggers do a lot of writing. One of the best habits of successful bloggers is staying consistent with your writing!
This is important in two ways. First, writing consistently lets your audience know when they can hear from you again. Secondly, Google and Pinterest love fresh, new content, which is good for your SEO!
In order to maintain consistency with your writing, choose how many posts you want to write a week. At the beginning of your blogging career, you may want to write more. As time goes on, you might want to write less!
For example, I have two blogs. At first, I wrote 3 posts a week for my travel blog, and now I only write once a week. This blog is newer, so I write 2 posts a week. It doesn’t matter so much the number of times you post per week, but rather that you are consistent.
If you can only handle one post a week, perfect! If you can write a post every day, power to ya! Just remember to choose a number that you will be able to maintain over a long period of time. You can eventually reduce your posting, but you want to remain in the same ballpark.
To maintain consistency, keep a list of blog post ideas so you always have inspiration. Try to write at least a little bit every day, even if it is just an email newsletter or an introduction to your post. Eventually, writing will just become a normal part of your day!
Habit #8: Prioritize self care
Take care of your mental and physical health. I cannot stress this one enough! Bloggers have a tendency to overwork themselves, because, well, we’re never really “not” at work. Working from home is a whole different game, and you might feel bad if you are watching TV instead of working.
Make sure you take time for yourself. It is easy to work every single day but try to schedule some time off. Maybe you don’t work on Sundays, or you only work a set amount of hours each day. Whatever works best for you!
This is important because blogger burnout is real. Like anything in life, if you work too much at it without any breaks, you will start to burn out. Take a night off, pamper yourself, go out with friends- whatever you need to do to rejuvenate yourself!
I have found taking some time to get off of my laptop is very helpful. Being on my laptop pretty much all day every day can be exhausting, but even taking a day off from it gives me that extra energy boost I needed!
If you start to feel blogger burnout, you’re not alone. Again, try to remember why you started in the first place and keep your passion alive. Maybe all you need is a day to yourself and you’ll be good to go!
Successful bloggers know when to give themselves a break, and when to get offline!
Habit #9: Learn from setbacks
Successful bloggers learn from their setbacks and don’t let obstacles get in the way of their dream. As a blogger, you will run into some pretty intense challenges that make what you’re doing seem pointless.
You will make mistakes, and that will be hard! However, take these mistakes as learning opportunities. After all, most bloggers start with zero knowledge about blogging whatsoever, so it’s only natural you will make mistakes.
Luckily for you, I made all the mistakes so hopefully, you don’t have to! Making mistakes has only made me want to help other bloggers more, and I want to be a resource to others!
When you make a mistake, maybe don’t even consider it a mistake. How can it be a mistake if you didn’t know what you were doing in the first place? Most blogging “mistakes” are really just your first attempt at trying something.
As far as setbacks go, you will run into a lot. The ever-changing world that is the internet is full of surprises and hurdles you don’t even know exist yet. Take these changes as learning opportunities. The more you learn about this world, the better you will understand it, and the more successful you will be!
Habit #10: Patience!
I saved the best (and hardest) for last! The most important of all habits of successful bloggers is patience. Patience is something I really struggle with- I want results right away, and find it very difficult to wait!
In blogging, you will write a post, promote it, and wait for the views to come in. However, they might not come for days. Weeks. Months!
Sorry guys, that’s just how blogging goes! Don’t expect to rank on the first page of Google in the first few months- it can even take over a year, or more!
This is a hard pill to swallow as a new blogger. You put in months and months of hard work, only to see…nothing. Patience my friends! It will happen, just not right now.
Like I said earlier, you are laying the foundation of your blog, for future results. Have patience, have faith, and be persistent!
